About

Why study German Literature?

Programs

Purpose: The students in the department of German Studies will acquire the knowledge and linguistic tools that will allow a deep understanding of the German speaking cultural world, as it developed in its historical, social, political and geographical contexts. Students will also be familiar with the diversity and the major cultural trends and traditions that compose this world.

Projects

In the coming year, we would organize monthly seminars where advanced students and teachers would present their current research.

In a monthly informal meeting with students and teachers, we shall talk about the interconnection between narration and literature. We would take our point of departure from personal life experiences of emigration, immigration, travelling flight and exile "between west and east" as the model for writing and thinking literature.

Welcome

Welcome to the Department of German Language and Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem!

Established in 1977 by Stéphane Mosès (1931–2007), the Department for German Language and Literature is the sole institution in Israel offering a comprehensive German Studies curriculum. We provide a dynamic and contemporary approach to the German literary landscape from the eighteenth century until today.

Why study German Literature?

1. The German modern intellectual tradition is characterized by its deep engagement with philosophy, literature, political theory, and critical thought, shaping global intellectual history from the Enlightenment onward. Key movements include German Classicism (Goethe, Schiller), Romanticism (Schlegel, Novalis), and Marxist thought (Marx, Engels), each of which revolutionized concepts of reason, history, and society. The Frankfurt School (Adorno, Horkheimer, Benjamin) introduced critical theory, emphasizing the role of culture, ideology, and mass media in shaping modern life.
